The Winners & Losers At The Miami Open

The 2019 Miami Open was one for the books, with so many shock defeats and victories. There were also some rather surprising winners while some not so much but rather expected.

From Roger Federer making history and returning to form, to Ash Barty causing an upset. The Miami Open had it all and it made for entertaining tennis throughout the entire tournament.

Federer Back To His Best

Coming into the tournament Federer’s consistency was lacking, especially after last week’s loss to Dominic Thiem in the Indian Wells Final. Although this week has been the complete opposite, there is no doubt that Federer is back because even at the age of 37 he is still playing like a guy much younger than him. Federer managed to beat American powerhouse John Isner in the Miami Open Final.

As we all know Isner has a vicious serve but Federer made coping with it look all too easy which showed that he is back in top form. On Sunday Federer lifted his 101st title of his insanely remarkable career by beating Isner 6-1, 6-4 in only 63 minutes. The win was convincing by Federer in securing his fourth tournament title and made history by surpassing some personal records. Federer only dropped three service points against Isner which meant that now he has played 154 tour-level-finals and this was the fewest points his ever dropped. He has also become the first tennis player whether it be man or woman to become a repeat champion in 2019.

The Winners & Losers At The Miami Open

Barty Has A Party

Australian Ash Barty caused a major upset as she won the Miami Open as the underdog. On Saturday she captured the biggest title of her career when she defeated Karolina Pliskova 7-6, 6-3. The major win has ensured that she makes it into the top 10 of the WTA rankings and also the first Australian to do so since Sam Stosur who achieved the feat in 2013. She continued to make history and did again when she became the first player from Down Under to win the Miami Open. This was her fourth WTA title and mainly secured it thanks to a career-high 15 aces in the final which was the highest of her career. This young lady has had an incredible five months as she won her first international title at the Zhuhai Elite Trophy at the end of 2018.

Halep Close To The Number One Spot

The former world number one Simona Halep has cut the gap at the top between her and current world number one Naomi Osaka. Halep managed to reach the final eight of the Miami Open but fell short when she lost to eventual champion Barty. Halep had held the spot in January but since has struggled for consistency and had dropped to second. It does not appear likely that she will stay there for long as she closed in on Osaka. Halep reduced the gap between her and Osaka to just 239 points after she lost early in the tournament.

Miami is known for its outstanding entertainment and vibe like city and this time it came in the form of the spectacular tennis that was on display in the last week. Fans will certainly be looking forward to next year’s tournament, plus all the thrilling matches this year.
