Paul Casey Retains The Title In Florida

The Englishman made history at Palm Harbour as he became the first player to win back to back titles.

It wasn’t easy but Casey became the first man to defend the Valspar Championship when he won in sensational fashion. The game when down to the wire and kept everyone on their toes.

Coming into the final day of play Casey was leading the pack. He led by just one shot over night but  coming into the final day in the early stages he dropped three shots. After the opening nine holes he the chasing pack were catching up which put him under a lot of  pressure. Holding the lead was tough as Casey has never defended a professional title and had only won the title for the second time in six attempts. Casey ended up digging deep and with two putts managed to end with eigh under 276. This was only his third win in an incredible 250 starts. Casey has this to say after his victory. “Today wasn’t easy but it felt very different since winning last year,” Casey said. “That felt like my first victory. Since then, new confidence. I’ve felt like a totally different player.”

Making History

Indeed he was a different player who made history.  It it wasn’t easy for Casey as Oosthuizen and Kokrak followed chased him down and lost out by a narrow margin. Kokrak has madevia 198th start through eight season and has still not managed to win a PGA tour. They managed scores of 277 but were also closed follow by two time masters champion Bubba Watson and South Korean Im-Sung Jae who were just one stroke behind. Casey has never been able to break a score of 70 after 54 holes. Coming into the final day world number one Dustin Johnson was just one stroke behind Casey. But after a horrying final round where he failed to make any birdies he was left behind and had a score of 74 which left him three shots behind in a tie for sixth.

Europe Flying High

The last time he lead a final round and won was in 2009 in Houston. Casey said that the belief he had after winning last years event gave him the confidence to pull it off again this year. Casey also became the third European to win a PGA tour this year following the likes of Francesco Molinari who won the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Rory McIlroy that win the Players Championship. The last time Europeans went on such a hot streak was in 2010. Casey will be playing in the Masters in a couple weeks and is definitely one of the favorites that many will have to keep an eye out for. He has a great record having never finish outside of the top 15 over the last four years.

Casey is in absolutely relentless form and has the potential of winning a few more tournaments this year. He is argubably the best player in Europe at the moment with his current form.
