This past weekend has many highlights but not many more have managed to outshine the win of Cameron Champ.
On a day that was highlighted by emotions Champ never let it overwhelm him as he scored a clutch birdie to win the Safeway Open by just one shot. The win for champ contained a lot of emotion because he dedicated it to his grandfather who introduced him to the beautiful game of golf and was supporting him even while in hospice care.
Champ Shines At Safeway Open
Tiger Woods was ecstatic when he did the impossible at Augusta, Shane Lowry was overjoyed by his performance at the Open but the most unforgetting most of 2019 so far has to have been the win by Champ. He was everywhere during the 18th hole at Silverado Resort but managed to pull off a stunning one-shot win over Adam Hadwin. Whether Champ wins any more tournaments which he surely can with a showing as such, none will ever top the feeling he must have felt winning the Safeway Open.
Invite To The Masters
He showed a spirited performance all week and honestly deserved nothing less than a victory. Champ’s breakthrough came last year at the Sanderson Farms Championship, but this was his second career PGA Tour win. Another huge bonus and milestone in Cameron’s career is that with this win it means that he will now receive an invitation to participate in the coveted Masters.
Key Reasons For Champ’s Success
Champ played for more than himself and the tournament meant so much more to him than just winning it. His grandfather was a great motivation for him to push on and get the win. Everything that’s been occurring in his life outside of golf has helped put everything on the course into perspective. Champ saved himself when he needed it most, he went from failing to score any birdie’s in any of the par 5’s to having birdied three of his last four shots. But none were as big as his birdie on the final hole.
Hadwin Came Close
Champ is one of the longest hitters in the game and that was a huge advantage for him as he led the field in driving distance. During play on the final hole, he launched a rocket 369 yards which was 33 yards further than any other drive during the final round. He might have edged Hadwin by one shot and Hadwin might have felt hard done by, but he can certainly take a lot of positives from the tournament as he showed us a reminder of just how good he still is.
Others In The Running
Hadwin also still has time to prove to International Presidents Cup Captain Ernie Els that he has what it takes to be apart of the team. This was his best performance since winning the 2017 Valspar Championship and his hit form at the right time. Another notable player was Justin Thomas who opened the new season with another top-five finish. This was impressively enough his third straight and second time in his career that he been able to achieve the feat.
An Exciting Future For The Champ
Nonetheless, nothing can be taken away from Champ’s performance, he deserved all the glory and he can now relish in it and kick on from here to win many more tournaments. It is an exciting time for golf as many new names are reaching the forefront while some familiar ones are making a return.
