Will West Ham Survive The Premier League?

It was all change this summer at West Ham as David Moyes departed, former Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini arrived and so did a raft of new players.

This gave West Ham and their fans a real cause for optimism this season, with the hope being to be considered one of the Premier League’s top outfits once again. However, things haven’t gone to plan so far and already questions are being asked.

They kicked off the Premier League campaign away at Liverpool, and while most would have had them down to lose, they probably wouldn’t have predicted a 4-0 hammering. West Ham were well beaten that day, only having 35% possession and registering 4 shots in total, with just 2 on target, compared to Liverpool’s 8. West Ham had chance to make amends though as they faced Bournemouth at the London Stadium in their second fixture of the season.

West Ham

West Ham took the lead in the 33rd minute against Eddie Howe’s men thanks to a Marko Arnautovic spot kick, but Callum Wilson was allowed to stroll through the West Ham backline to level things on 60 minutes, before slack defending at a corner saw Steve Cook head home 6 minutes later to snatch all three points. Even though West Ham saw more of the ball, Bournemouth seemed to possess more of an attacking verve, leaving fans dismayed.

Next up for West Ham was a trip across London to the Emirates as they looked to chalk up their first win of the campaign against Unai Emery’s Arsenal. Again, West Ham took the lead, and again it was Arnautovic who was the man on target, but they ended up on the wrong side of a 3-1 defeat as Nacho Monreal, an own goal from debutant Issa Diop and Alexandre Lacazette saw Pellegrini’s men leave North London empty handed.

West Ham now sit at the foot of the table, with a goal difference of -7, with Wolves next up at to play. While the defeats have been bad, against Arsenal, West Ham did at times look the part in an attacking sense. Felipe Anderson really stood out and so did Arnautovic, with the latter going off injured. The problem so far has been in defence, with mistakes proving to be costly time and time again already this term.

While the pressure will now be on for West Ham to get some points on the board at home to Wolves, if Pellegrini and his staff can address the defensive frailties seen so far, they still have a great chance of going very well this season. They certainly have the attacking talent that can hurt teams in this division but if they can’t keep the ball out of Fabianksi’s net, it could become a tiresome season for West Ham fans once again, something that they were not expecting at all, especially with Manuel Pellegrini in charge. Their next couple of games could be crucial, even at such an early stage of the season.
