Sunday English Premier League Preview 27 August

It’s set to be another thrilling Sunday of Premier League football, with some great games in store. Current champions Chelsea take on a much improved Everton side at Stamford Bridge, Tony Pulis sees one of his former clubs in Stoke come to The Hawthorns, Spurs in their Wembley home will be looking to put last week’s defeat to Chelsea behind them against Burnley and the clash of the day sees Liverpool take on Arsenal at Anfield.

So what can we expect from these four games and how will they end up going?

Chelsea vs Everton

Chelsea didn’t get off to the best of starts in their title defence losing to Burnley on the opening day but quickly got into their stride against Spurs and looked the real deal once again. They will be looking to beat an in-form Everton side, which has a rather exciting look since there have been quite a few new arrivals this summer.

Chelsea are missing captain Gary Cahill through suspension so Antonio Conte will have to reshuffle his backline. Everton are without quite a few in midfield due to injury and suspension but this isn’t really the telling point. Everton played Monday and then Thursday so you would expect that to have an impact on The Toffees. Chelsea, on the back of their morale boosting win over Spurs, should edge this one.

West Brom vs Stoke

West Brom vs Stoke is a tasty encounter as Tony Pulis, the WBA manager, is the man who really transformed Stoke over the years. His current side has a 100% win record in the league so far and Stoke come into the game after beating Arsenal.

West Brom are experts at grinding out victories, they keep it tight at the back but always seem capable of nicking a goal. Jay Rodriguez has been impressive leading the line for The Baggies and he will surely break his duck for them soon.

Both sides are missing key men but you can see another well-earned victory for West Brom here. It would take something special for Stoke to turn them over but I guess with the likes of Jese in your side, you always stand a chance.

Liverpool vs Arsenal

The biggest clash of the weekend in the top flight. Jurgen Klopp’s free scoring Liverpool take on Arsene Wenger’s charges at Anfield. It’s going to be a thrilling game that’s for sure. Liverpool have looked great going forward, fast and incisive but they still look frail at the back. Arsenal can score goals, even without Alexis Sanchez, so they will be looking to exploit the Liverpool backline.

It’s been an interesting summer for both sides so far. Coutinho seems to want out of Anfield and Sanchez seems to want out of The Emirates but both sides are more than capable in the absence of these two players. Alexandre Lacazette will be looking to show what he’s about once again after making a great start in the opening game against Leicester.

You can see this game being more about who concedes less. Liverpool attack with pace and purpose and it remains to be seen whether this back three system for Arsenal actually works. Arsenal, on their day, can unlock any defence, especially a Liverpool backline that gets itself in all sorts of needless trouble regularly. You’ve got to expect a high scoring game here, which could swing either way.

Spurs vs Burnley

Spurs can’t afford Wembley to become a problem for them so they need to right the wrongs of last week and beat Burnley. Burnley, who unlike Spurs, were victorious against Chelsea, will be looking to get back on track.

It’s a good opportunity for Mauricio Pochettino and his side to show there is no Wembley curse today but it won’t be easy against a hard working Burnley side who are very capable, as they showed against Chelsea. Harry Kane typically doesn’t score in August but he has hit the woodwork a couple of times so far this season and if he plays well, you can see Spurs having too much for Sean Dyche’s men.

One thing is for certain though, Spurs can’t go into this game thinking Burnley are already beat and they can’t afford to have a negative mind set about Wembley or they could end up dropping points.
