Spurs suffer bitter defeat against Chelsea

On Tuesday night the London Derby took place between Spurs and Chelsea in what was a game of utmost importance to both sides. Both teams came into the derby in poor form and both needed the victory as it would mean un-welcomed consequences.

From Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarri’s drama with goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga to Spurs losing to Burnley last week. They’re both currently fighting it out for a top four finish with Spurs hopes of catching Liverpool all but dashed after losing last week.

Spurs & Chelsea Woes

Both sides came into the game needing the win extremely badly, Chelsea especially who have been on an extremely poor run of late. Their two losses to Manchester City in the space of a week has really hampered the spirits around the Chelsea camp. From losing 6-0 to the Cityzens in the Premier League to losing to them in the Carabao Cup final on penalties as well has not sat well with the Chelsea faithful. Sarri’s job has been under scrutiny since which meant winning the game against Spurs vital.

Chelsea vs Spurs 2-0

To pile on the misery Sarri was left rather embarrassed in the final against Manchester City after Kepa refused to be subbed. That cost the most expensive goalkeeper in the world, as he was dropped for the game on Tuesday night. On the other hand, Spurs put on an impressive performance beating Bundesliga leader Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League having beaten them 3-0, but the happiness was short lived as they suffered a shock 2-1 defeat to Burnley at the weekend.

London Derby Recap

The game started off fantastically with Gonzalo Higuain hitting the woodwork for Chelsea and Spurs Harry Winks having a similar misfortune. The first half was a tough one with chances hard to come by with some intense tackles being made. The second half started off rather slow until the 57th minute when Pedro made a darting run through the Spurs defence and slotted the ball through Hugo Lloris legs.

Harry Kane who has just recently returned from injury missed a great opportunity to bring Spurs back into the game and they would soon rue those misses. Not often do you see a defender one on one with their goalkeeper and score an own goal quite like Kieran Tripper did. The Spurs fullback turned Olivier Giroud’s flick past around his goalkeeper and all but sealed the game for Chelsea with just 6 minutes left on the clock.

Looking Ahead

This was a real boost for Sarri as his team managed to keep up with the top four while Spurs chances of winning the title are slim. Sarri making a change of goalkeeper proved to be worth it as Willy Caballero managed to keep a clean sheet and justified his start. For Spurs its back to the drawing books because they have another tough game coming up the weekend when they face Arsenal in the North London Derby. They are also now in the fight for top four after Spurs manager Pochettino admitted that winning the title is impossible.
