Premier League Weekend Talking Points

After every Premier League weekend, there are always talking points. Some due to amazing performances, some down to controversy and others after a questionable refereeing decision.

This weekend has been no different and once again there were a fair few talking points after the games that took place on both Saturday and Sunday.

First of all there has to be a special mention for Tottenham striker Harry Kane. The Chingford born forward helped himself to two goals against Everton in Spurs’ 3-0 victory at Goodison Park and in doing so bagged his 100th and 101st in a Tottenham shirt. The 100th was a fluke as the England striker looked to whip a ball into the box but instead found the back of Jordan Pickford’s net. The 101st was a typically clinical finish from close range. You’d expect both Kane and Spurs to go from strength to strength now.

Premier League Weekend Review

One of the main talking points of the weekend has to be Sadio Mane’s red card against Manchester City. The Liverpool striker was dismissed after he inadvertently caught City goalkeeper Ederson flush in the face with his boot, after trying to latch onto a ball over the top. The Senegalese attacker only ever had eyes for the ball and Ederson did come out at speed to try and clear the danger but by the letter of the law Mane had to go. Ederson required hospital treatment but was back at the Etihad before the final whistle. With no intent by Mane, was a red too harsh? Is the rule correct?

Manchester United dropped points for this first time this campaign on Saturday evening after they drew 2-2 with Stoke. Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting had put The Potters ahead but Marcus Rashford drew United level inside 3 minutes. Romelu Lukaku then continued his hot streak of form by put Jose Mourinho’s men into the league only to see Choupo-Moting hit back for Mark Hughes’ side. Lukaku could have won it late on for United but it finished 2-2. There was some controversy after the final whistle at the bet365 Stadium. After a bit of a disagreement during the game which saw Mark Hughes tell Jose Mourinho to get out of his technical area, Mourinho refused to shake the Welshman’s hand when the game was up.

Elsewhere, Brighton finally got off the mark, beating West Brom 3-1. This saw them pick up their first points, win and score their first ever goals in the top flight. It wasn’t good news for Frank de Boer and Crystal Palace though. Their 1-0 defeat at the hands of Burnley now means that they’ve lost all 4 Premier League games so far. Not only that, they have yet to score a goal this season too. Things need to improve for Palace and fast with many tipping De Boer to be the first manager to lose his job this season. Bournemouth are also without a point but they have played City and Arsenal in their last two games.
