Premier League Relegation Battle

With the final stretch of the English Premier League coming teams are fighting it out to avoid the drop. While some teams still have a fighting chance, others don’t anymore.

Huddersfield are one the teams who no longer have a chance to try and escape the drop with their fate all but sealed. There are just two teams that could be relegated and there are five teams who are still trying hard to not be relegated.

Huddersfield Already Relegated

Huddersfield have had a tough season to say the least and the nightmare only got worse over the weekend when they became the first team to be relegated this season. This past weekend they lost the reverse fixture to Crystal Palace 2-0 after another Milivojevic penalty and van Aanholt strike. Palace condemned them to their four straight loss after losing to West Ham, Bournemouth and Brighton as well. They have now become only the second team in Premier League history to be relegated before the end of March and survived just one day longer than Derby County. With only 14 points in total this season they have just managed to pass the Terriers who only amassed 11 points.

Their next two teams that they’ll hope to pass as a consolation is Sunderland’s total of 15 points in 2005-06 and Aston Villa’s total of 17 in 2015-16. Their biggest issue this season has been in front of goal as they have lacked goals. Since they gained promotion to the Premier League they have failed to score in more than half their games which is the highest percentage in the history of the competition. They have not scored in shockingly enough 17 of their 32 games this season alone.

Cardiff Fighting Spirit

On Sunday Cardiff City suffered a 2-1 defeat to top six opponents Chelsea. The game was an intense one and Cardiff lead the Blues for majority of the game until they managed to snatch a late winner. Cardiff manager Neil Warnock was furious at the refereeing and felt that a lot of decisions went against his team. Cardiff are third from bottom and could be relegated. But with the fight that they showed against Chelsea there is still hope yet that they could survive the drop.

Will Burnley survive?

Burnley are currently fourth from bottom and have played one more game than Cardiff which means they cannot afford any slip ups if they wish to stay in the Premier League. Come the first half of the season they were just poor having only managed a low 12 points by the end of December. Although since the turn of the year they have been a completely different side having gained 21 points from just 13 matches. They are currently in the thick of the relegation battle but they are a good enough side to be able to avoid the drop.

Fulham Down And Out

Fulham returned to the Premier League with much promise having spent a lot on transfers and also with the talent they have in the side. It has proved not enough as they only have 17 points this season. They are currently 11 points behind Cardiff and have still played two games more. Their biggest problem this season has been their defence as they have conceded the highest amount of goals this season. The 4-1 loss to Watford last night all but secured their fate as they were officially relegated back to the Championship.

The race to survive relegation has intensified with many of the bottom clubs showing some fight. But will it prove to be enough or will their fight prove to be too little too late.
