On Wednesday 23 January 2019, Chelsea secured an incredibly big loan deal for the well-known Gonzalo Higuain.
The prolific Argentine goal scorer has recently been struggling for form during his loan spell at AC Milan in Italy’s Serie A. The 31-year-old striker has chosen to make the move to Stanford Bridge from Juventus on a 6-month loan and if he proves successful Chelsea have the option to buy. Maurizio Sarri has chosen to reunite with Higuain after they were together at Napoli during the 2015/16 season.
On Wednesday Higuain had gone for a medical to secure his loan spell to Chelsea. The Blues have an option of extending the loan deal for Higuain for €18 million, on the other hand, if they choose to buy the striker they would have to pay €36 million which needs to be paid over two years. Higuain proved to be one of the best strikers in the world during his time at Napoli under Sarri. He was clinical in and around the penalty area scoring 36 goals and broke a long-standing record in the Serie A.
He is an established striker and that’s proven with all his accolades such as being named in the Serie A Team of the Year not once but three times. Higuain has domestic league titles with Real Madrid and Juventus and even won the Italian Cup in 2013/14 with Napoli. On an international stage Higuain has proven himself as well, despite Argentina producing many great strikers, Higuain represented them at three World Cups and even started the final against Germany in 2014. During the 2015-16 season Higuain had already managed to score his 200th club career goal proving even more that he is an incredible goal scorer.
Higuain is set to replace Alvaro Morata who joined Atletico Madrid on loan. Morata had found life difficult in the Premier League and Sarri hopes that Higuain break the curse of many former Chelsea strikers. Higuain stated in his interview “I now hope I can give back that trust Chelsea have shown me out on the pitch. I can’t wait to start, and I hope to adapt as soon as possible.” The Chelsea faithful hope he can change the club fortunes around with loads of goals.
Chelsea have been very reliant on the likes of Eden Hazard of late which has seen a decline in the superstar’s performances. Higuain looks to remove from the strain on Hazard and hopefully create a good link between the two. Despite his big reputation Higuain has only played 130 minutes this season and has one goal less than the struggling Morata. Sarri believes that he will show his quality for Chelsea which could prove true with a manager who fully backs him and that he has previously shone under.
Nobody knows what the future holds for the Argentine striker, but he can certainly prove to be the answer to all Chelsea’s goal scoring problems. He could be the man who secures them a spot in the top four this season by picking up his form, he has the experience to prosper so let’s see if he can live up to the hype.
