Can Liverpool Really Rival City For The Title?

The new Premier League season is underway, and Liverpool are the side tipped by most as having the best chance of challenging current title holders Manchester City for the title.

They’ve kicked off the 2018/19 campaign in style as you’d expect, winning both of their opening two fixtures. They beat West Ham on the opening day 4-0, before winning 2-0 away at Crystal Palace last time out.

As things stand, Liverpool are currently second in the table with Manchester City ahead of them on goal difference and this is the order many expect come the end of the season. The question is, can Liverpool overthrow Guardiola’s men? The first thing to notice is that Liverpool are yet to concede a goal in the Premier League. The defence was a huge problem for Jurgen Klopp’s side and he remedied that by bringing in Virgil van Dijk from Southampton, who has really helped tighten them up at the back.

Another problem area for Liverpool has been the goalkeeping position, with both Simon Mignolet and Loris Karius not at the level required to mount a credible title challenge. Klopp has spent big to bring in Brazil stopper Alisson from Roma to solve this issue and this, along with a stronger defence, will undoubtedly make Liverpool a much more complete outfit this season. Klopp has done a sterling job in addressing the weak points within his squad and this will also help to benefit the attacking part of the team too.

The trio of Mo Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane were one of the world’s most feared attacking units last season, and they’re already off to a good start this campaign. Mane has three goals in two games, while Salah is also off the mark, proving that last season wasn’t just a flash in the pan. The trio can score goals against any side in world football and they’ll be integral in Liverpool challenging for the title. Klopp also brought in Xherdan Shaqiri this summer from relegated Stoke to add further depth to his attacking line, while Daniel Sturridge has made two substitute appearances and scored a minute after coming on against West Ham on the opening day.

When it comes to Liverpool, most of the focus is on the attacking talent they have at the top of the pitch, but they are strong in midfield too. However, they have made a concerted effort to take things to the next level this season with the arrivals of Naby Keita and Fabinho. The former has been extremely impressive so far, starting both games, and adding a real verve to a midfield that is packed full of work rate and determination. Fabinho adds that depth that maybe Liverpool have lacked over the last few seasons.

Everything says that Liverpool can challenge City for the title, but whether they will have enough to wrestle it away from Pep’s men remains to be seen. They have the players and the ability, but they will need to deliver consistently, while also maintaining challenges on multiple fronts.
