This weekend will see the showpiece of English football take place at Wembley Stadium, the FA Cup final.
While many people have suggested that the cup has lost some of his magic, Chelsea and Manchester United fans would disagree ahead of final, with both sides seeing this as an ideal way to cap off their season by winning one of English football’s most prestigious crowns. Antonio Conte and Jose Mourinho will go head to head as both sides look to claim their only piece of silverware this campaign, but who will come out on top?
Well, first of all, this could be the final time we see Antonio Conte in the Chelsea dugout as rumours persist that he will leave the club following the conclusion of the current season. It would certainly be the perfect way to bow out by giving the fans something to celebrate in what has been a disappointing season in many respects. After winning the title in his maiden campaign at the club, Conte failed to guide Chelsea to a top-four finish this time around meaning they have missed out on Champions League football for next season.
For Jose Mourinho though, the story is a bit different and a bit more positive too. His Manchester United side are the ones who got closest to Manchester City as they romped home with the Premier League title. While they have had disappointments, especially when they were knocked out of the Champions League at home to Sevilla, they have been impressive in their results and have beaten the best sides in the division, including City, Liverpool and Chelsea.
So, both managers and teams will be looking to lift the FA Cup trophy for different reasons. When it comes down to the question of who will win on the day, finals have always belonged to Jose Mourinho. He just seems to have this knack of being able to ensure his side run out as winners and this is why United must start the game as favourites. While United didn’t win the league, they aren’t coming into the game off the back of disappointment like Chelsea are, and with rumours that Romelu Lukaku could be back fit, they stand a great chance of winning.
Chelsea in many respects has nothing to lose and everything to gain from winning the FA Cup. Everyone will be expecting United to win, and this will certainly relieve any pressure on them ahead of the game. While winning the FA Cup won’t be enough to gloss over the disappointing season they have had, it will offer some consolation for the fans who will certainly have expected better.
It should also be a tasty affair down on the touchline at Wembley too, with Conte and Mourinho clashing in the past. Mourinho, who has managed Chelsea twice, will enjoy putting one over on his former employers that’s for sure. According to most bookmakers, Manchester United are the team most likely to lift the trophy in a close game with not many goals scored, but in a final, anything could happen.
