Last night the Champions League group stages continued and while there were some enticing games, the teams who were expected to win did.
Certain groups are now wide open with teams like Chelsea and Champions Liverpool getting their first victories of the campaign.
Reds Pushed All The Way
The reigning Champions League holders Liverpool were put to the test against Red Bull Salzburg. The Reds finally got their campaign and title defence on the road with a hard-fought 4-3 win. It was yet again another famous night at Anfield that will definitely be remembered for a long time.
The Ups And Downs
Salzburg had a horrific first half going behind 3-0 but quickly turned it around with a stunning comeback to make it 3-3. It took a late winner from the Egyptian King Mohamed Salah to seal the game for the champions. Both sides produced absolutely breathtaking football on the night and either team deserved to win. The champions just showed why they are precisely that.
Sadio Mané Steps Up
Another huge achievement on the night went the way of Sadio Mané, the highly underrated Liverpool forward became just the third Reds player ever to score 15 Champions League goals after legend Steven Gerrard and Salah. Liverpool had an identical start to last seasons campaign which led to them lifting the trophy, therefore, we can only wonder whether history could be repeating itself.
Barca Comeback Comfortably
Barcelona versus Inter Milan, an old rivalry that never ceases to amaze us all. Last night was no different as we were thoroughly entertained. The game started in disastrous fashion for the Catalans as they went behind early from a goal by Lautaro Martínez. But Luis Suarez later equalized with a wonderful volley. Barcelona then scored a later winner that was produced from a moment of magic by the great Lionel Messi, his run was matched by another absolutely brilliant finish by Suarez.
The Perfect Partnership
The combination of Messi and Suarez may have been missing for a while now but we saw that vintage partnership destroy Inter Milan last night. Anyone that thinks that the magical partnership between them is gone should just ask Inter Milan. Although, shockingly enough this was Suarez first Champions League group stage goals for three years.
Dortmund Doing Well
The victory for Barcelona means that they are joint top of their group on four points. They will join Borussia Dortmund who won their game earlier on that night, 2-0 against Slavia Prague. Inter Milan sit behind them on just one point meaning they have a lot to do; if they don’t want to be dropped down to the Europa League.
Chelsea Are Up And Running
Chelsea played Lille last night knowing that they need a victory after losing to Valencia in their opening game. They have been heavily reliant on their youth due to their transfer ban last season and their youth has not disappointed. Especially Tammy Abraham who opened the scoring last night with a brilliant first touch and finish. They were put to work with Lille coming back to tie the game but Willian had other ideas scoring a beautiful volley to win the game 2-1.
Lampard Must Be Pleased
One could say it’s quite remarkable what Chelsea manager and legend Frank Lampard is managing to achieve with this squad. He has brought out the best in youngsters like Abraham and Mason Mount who had a fantastic game. But also in Willian who’s found his form again. Chelsea now need to use this victory to kick on for the rest of the campaign and continue to build their squad.
