Football is a topic that always throws up numerous great debates. One of the most common and popular ones, especially over the last few years, has been who is the better player out of Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.
It’s a debate that seems to rage on, with people often favouring one over the other, before going on to change their minds when the other one bags a hat trick or wins an award. They’re both great players in their own right but which one is actually the best?
Messi is very much a one club player but since coming through at the Nou Camp he has literally taken the world by storm. The little Argentinian has a wand of a left foot, with the ability to weave his way past numerous players while still also being capable of finishing off moves with a real touch of class.
His record at Barcelona in terms of his contributions is easily one of the best around and the fact that he keeps producing the goods year on year, domestically and in Europe, shows you just how good a player he is. As things stand he has made 621 appearances for Barca, scoring 534 goals and setting up a further 244. He’s won the Ballon D’or 5 times, the Champions League 4 times, been declared the best player in Europe thrice and has helped Barcelona win La Liga 8 times amongst many other things.
The only man on the planet who can rival Messi is of course Cristiano Ronaldo. Ronaldo made the breakthrough at Sporting before Sir Alex Ferguson brought him to Old Trafford and played a big role in moulding him into a superstar. This is one of the very few differences between the two players, Ronaldo has delivered in the Premier League at Manchester United as well as in La Liga with Real Madrid.
At United Ronaldo grew as a player before becoming of the best players the division has ever seen. He played 291 times for the Red Devils, scoring 118 goals and assisting 61. He dreamed of playing for Real Madrid and when he got his chance to move, he took it, immediately hitting the ground running. Up to now he has 432 goals and 129 assists from 424 games, a truly outstanding record.
Like Messi, Ronaldo has also won the Ballon D’Or 5 times. He won it first with Manchester United, before winning another 4 with Real. He’s also a 4 times Champions League winner too, winning it once with United in 2008. When you compare Ronaldo and Messi’s honours there isn’t really much difference, however, the former has experienced success at International level whereas the former hasn’t.
Ronaldo won the Euros with Portugal in 2016 and many would say that this sets him apart from Messi in a way. That and also the fact that he has been successful in two of Europe’s top leagues. The reality is thought that they’re both great players and they’ve really set the bar when it comes to footballing ability and winning trophies and awards. It’s unlikely we will see anything else like this rivalry for a good few years to come.
