Pakistan has further extended their reputation as the most unpredictable side in world cricket. One day they’re struggling against average teams and the next they are beating strong opponents like New Zealand.
They are putting up a strong and late showing in order to reach the semi-finals and replicate their heroics of the 1992 World Cup where they won their remaining three games to qualify for the semi-finals and then went on to lift the trophy. If form is anything to go by then one can certainly back Pakistan.
Do Or Die For Pakistan
The match between New Zealand and Pakistan took place at Edgbaston and what an atmosphere there was which was fitting for an exciting game. Pakistan came to play and outmatched New Zealand by beating them by 6 wickets. This means that Pakistan now have seven points and sit just outside the top four.
What It Means To England
This also highlights a lot of trouble for England who now have to win their remaining two games against tough opponents where as Pakistan have higher odds of advancing when they face Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Pakistan seem to be eagerly awaiting the downfall of England who have a mountain to climb if they want to qualify for the semi-finals.
Pakistan Batting Masterclass
Barbar Azam led the Pakistani batting attack in chasing a low score of 238. He took a liking to the New Zealand bowlers by scoring a near flawless 101. He was not alone as Haris Sohail smashed his way to 68 as Pakistan chased down their target with ease and five balls to spare. Shaheen Afridi was another star for Pakistan but with the ball as he ripped through the New Zealand batting lineup for figures of 3 for 28.
New Zealand Poor
The Black Caps were in serious trouble when they were rescued by James Neesham who scored an unbeaten 97 and helped New Zealand post a store that was actually defendable. But that was the only positive for New Zealand throughout the day as they were completely outplayed.
Qualification Scenarios As It Stands
New Zealand might have lost but this was only their first lost of the tournament which means they’re still in with a very good chance. They currently sit second and with just one more win they can qualify comfortably. India are another team who have very favorable odds to qualify for the semi-finals. They have only played five games but have four wins and one no result. Two wins could mean they are set in the semi-finals and could go all the way.
Sri Lanka Out
Sri Lanka mathematically stand a chance but realistically they are out although not officially. The maximum amount of points that they can achieve is eight and with Pakistan already being on eight and having two games left to play Sri Lanka will have a tough fight to just achieve fifth.
Hope For Bangladesh
Bangladesh have been the serious underdogs this tournament but have beaten South Africa and West Indies. They stand a strong chance of reaching the semi-finals, they the chance of reaching 11 points which would surely be enough.
More Twists And Turns
The World Cup has been unpredictable thus far James Neesham but exciting nonetheless which means the semi-finals can only leave us more on the edge of our seats.
