On Sunday marked the most important day of cricket for both New Zealand and England. What a day of cricket it was, the crowd was electric and they were hyped up even more by all the drama.
The final also marked a day where a new team would be crowned the world champions and the first time any of these two nations have won the coveted prize.
England Destined to Win
Wow is the only real expression for a game that went down to the wire. Lord’s was host to probably the best cricket World Cup Final anyone has ever seen. England won their maiden tournament in astonishing fashion that left many also feeling conflicted. England enjoyed a lot of fortune in a vital part of the game, they were almost destined to win. England were awarded their maiden World Cup title on a count out and they had outscored New Zealand in boundaries in the initial 50 over contest.
New Zealand Batting
New Zealand batted first and struggled for runs, they could only achieve a total of 241 that was led by 55 from Henry Nicholls. Chris Woakes and Liam Plunkett grabbed 3 wickets a piece in reducing New Zealand to a below par score. But that’s what we thought, the score ended up being tough to chase down for the hosts, England could only achieve 241 as well and did so in controversial fashion.
England SUPER-Hero Stokes
England began their final over of the original 50 overs needing 15 runs to win. The Black Caps handed the ball to Trent Boult who began the over brilliantly with two dot balls. But then up stepped Ben Stokes who struck a six which left England needing 9 off the final 3 balls. This is where fate intervened as Guptill threw a ball in from the boundary which deflected off of Stokes to the other side of the boundary and granting England six runs. But England still couldn’t achieve victory needing 3 from 2 and the game went into a super over.
Stokes and Jos Butler returned for the super over and smashed 15 runs. New Zealand sent in Guptill and Jimmy Neesham who struggled until Neesham hit a six. But it was all in vain, despite scoring 15 as well in their super over the Black Caps still lost by virtue of a count out.
Disappointed Black Caps
New Zealand will feel that this will be a difficult one to swallow, to lose a final in such heartbreaking fashion will really take some time to get over. But the team have still expressed pride despite the loss. The team felt proud of their performances and deservedly so. They fought until the very end only for the game to end in such an unfortunate way. Perhaps the ICC need to introduce a rule that teams will continue to play a super over until a result is achieved. Both teams would deserve the trophy at the end of the day because both sides showed tremendous skill, heart and determination.
One Of The Best
It’s going to be quite difficult to top a final that literally had it all. What a World Cup it has been, England have hosted arguably one of the best world cups in the history of cricket which has left us all wanting more.
