An England team that was low on confidence came into their game against India knowing that anything less than a win would mean they would be knocked out of the tournament.
The hosts bounced back from two successive losses against Australia and Sri Lanka, which put their World Cup in jeopardy. But after a brave win against India they now know that one more win could see them through to the semi-finals.
Hosts Defeat India
England roared to a 31 run victory over India on Sunday in a very high scoring game. This was India’s first loss of the World Cup thus far as they failed to chase down 338 at Edgbaston. The defeat has also had a huge affect on the log as more teams have an opportunity now of reaching the semi-finals. Pakistan would’ve been hoping that India won which would’ve kept them in the top four, now both India and New Zealand have failed to secure their playoff spots.
Super Batting By Bairstow
England put up a tough total and that was because of Jonny Bairstow, the England opener let his bat do the talking as he smashed his way to 111. He was accompanied by Jason Roy who recently returned from a hamstring injury but played his part well scoring an aggressive 66. All-rounder Ben Stokes performed once again but this time not in a losing cause, he scored 79 which made it his third half-century in a row. England finally lived up up to the high standards that everyone has been keeping them to.
The hosts might have put up a high score but they still needed disciplined bowling to defend that total which is exactly what their bowling attack provided. India never looked convincing from the onset, it showed with KL Rahul getting out early. This brought Virat Kohli to the middle and together with Rohit Sharma India always stood a chance, for most of the game with the pair there it seemed as if India would pull off the highest World Cup run chase. The pair had a magnificent 138 run partnership with Kohli scoring 66 and Sharma getting yet another century. Kohli now has a half century for every game thus far in the tournament which is further cementing why his the best batsman in the world.
India Run Rate Suffers
After they departed India weren’t that far behind and it brought Ms Dhoni and Hardik Pandya to the crease, with both being big hitters. What shocked everyone is that both batsman played slowly despite the run rate increase over after over. It seemed as if India were trying to lose on purpose because they had wickets in hand and still never went big to try and reach the total. England restricted India to 306 for 5 and now sit with their fate in their own hands.
New Zealand Next
England will need to hold their nerve against a New Zealand side on Wednesday that have been in great form and that are very close to qualifying. Should the hosts lose and Pakistan beat Bangladesh it would mean that Pakistan would go through.
