Notts Outlaws – First Time Winners of T20 title

The Notts Outlaws won their maiden domestic 20-over title on Saturday after an impressive 22-run victory over the Birmingham Bears at Edgbaston in the T20 Blast final.

They had been a disappointing 30-3 down early on in the fixture but thanks to an impressive run stand of 132 between Brendan Taylor and Samit Patel, they managed to claw their way to 190-4. This T20 Blast success now means that the Notts Outlaws are champions of both domestic limited-overs tournaments, after they tasted success in the One-Day Cup at Lord’s back in July.

It could actually be success on three fronts with a treble well in the sights of Peter Moores and his Notts side. Winning the Division Two title in the County Championship would go on to undoubtedly make this one of the most successful periods in their recent history and will definitely give the Outlaws fans three reasons to cheer.

Notts Outlaws T20 Final Win

Things couldn’t have got off to a worse start really for The Outlaws as their top order was toppled far too easily. Even England opener Alex Hales found himself out for the second low score of the day after being bowled by Three Lions teammate Chris Woakes. Woakes was instrumental in The Outlaws’ terrible start as he dispatched also both Tom Moores and Riki Wessels. It would need a remarkable effort from Peter Moores’ side to turn the tide.

It was literally a case of Brendan Taylor and Samit Patel to the rescue. Patel managed to hit four sixes under ever increasing pressure as he looked to get The Outlaws back on track. It was a tough task and the all-rounder really rose to the occasion with some great footwork against a string bowling attack. To hit the boundary regularly was a great feat after such a bad start by Notts.

Former Zimbabwe international Taylor was instrumental in the comeback too. Patel may have taken a lot of the glory but Taylor did manage to find the boundary no fewer than nine times. This mixed with some superb batting skills saw Notts Outlaws back in the tie and when captain Dan Christian stepped up to hit 24 from eight balls, the job was complete.

The Birmingham Bears will be left extremely disappointed, especially after the great start that they made in the final. Sam Hain had hit a respective 72 to send The Bears on their way but, even though they had looked in a very strong and commanding position, they were ultimately undone by Notts Outlaws’ resilience and the spending batting of Brendan Taylor, Samit Patel and then Dan Christian.

It would be great to see The Outlaws go on and make it a hat trick of successes by winning the Division Two title in the County Championship. Add that to the T20 Blast and their One Day Cup win at Lord’s and you begin to see why many hold coach Peter Moores in extremely high regard.
