All-Star weekend has passed, and the NBA has returned to normal this weekend and what a way to return it was for the Oklahoma City Thunder. On Friday night they played the Utah Jazz and what a game it was, it was absolutely magnificent.
Both teams returned fresh and put on an incredible show, the game had it all as it went into double overtime. Paul George and Russell Westbrook made history again and looked like two players who are impossible to stop at this moment in time.
Thunder vs Jazz
The Thunder and Jazz have had an intense rivalry in recent times, especially since the Jazz knocked the Thunder out of the playoffs last season winning the series 4-2. This might have been a regular season game but the atmosphere from the get-go made it feel as if it was another playoff game between the two. The first quarter was already quite entertaining with both teams having a reply to one another. Donovan Mitchell looked great as he scored 14 points in the quarter and had 5/5 and score 2 three-pointers. After the first quarter the scores were extremely close at 35-34 to OKC.
Mitchell continued his run in the game and gave the Jazz in the third quarter, if he continues to play the way he did in this game the Jazz are going to be tough to beat in the playoffs. Mitchell helped the Jazz take the lead in the third quarter as they took it 38-27 and were heading into the fourth confident. But then came Westbrook and George who are probably the most lethal partnership in the league at the moment. These two made some huge plays and turned the game around.
The game headed to overtime but still couldn’t be separated as the game continued its back and forth scoring. The two teams were going at it pound for pound and took the game into double overtime. Wow, what a double overtime it was. With just 0.8 seconds left on the clock George went around Joe Ingles and threw a floater above Rudy Gobert that went in and gave OKC the win!
Westbrook & George
These two are both showing their worth this season and are carrying the Thunder. George who is probably in the top three to win MVP this season and Westbrook who just can’t stop scoring triple doubles. The pair became the first teammates since 1983 to put up 40-5-5. Although they managed quite high numbers Westbrook’s record-breaking triple-double run ended after he just missed out on one, still managed an incredible 43 points, 15 rebounds and 8 assists.
Westbrook also shot 15-29 from the field while George continued his surge towards winning MVP this season. He put on a display that should give him the award after he scored 45 points, got 9 rebounds and 7 assists. His dagger in double overtime that won OKC the game stole the show as the crowd erupted. If these two continue this rich vein of form the OKC will be one of the favourites to win the championship. They could even take on the almighty Golden Sate Warriors who has an All-Star starting line-up.
This season is looking bright for both the Jazz and the OKC who look like they’ll cause problems in the playoffs. Jazz who have Mitchell that can carry their team and OKC who have Westbrook and George all have the ability to take their teams all the way. This game has been a prime example of that as it was an incredible game of basketball.
