On Friday night Game 3 between the Portland Trail Blazers and Denver Nuggets took place. But what occurred is hard to believe and something that needs to be seen for you to believe.
History was made on the night and it was the first time a game went to four overtimes in the NBA playoffs since 1953. So, what exactly did happen on the night?
The game took four quarters and four overtimes to decide the eventual winner which was the Blazers who took a 2-1 series lead. The four overtimes meant that this was tied for the longest game in NBA playoff history. Every player on either side gave it their all last night and it showed with how many minutes they played. Nikola Jokic played 65 minutes and yes you read correctly. The big man showed incredible endurance and perseverance, but he wasn’t the only one with the star of the night CJ McCollum playing 60 minutes. This showed that both teams have a lot of heart because these were intense minutes. Game four is just two days away and they’ll have to show this unbelievable endurance again.
Shooting Their Shots
Through the duration of the game there was some really tight and hard defence on display. But that appeared to bring out the best in players as they were making tough shots especially in overtime. Two players who really stepped up were McCollum and Jamal Murray. They were both cold blooded with Murray finishing with 34 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. McCollum on the other hand is simple just sensational, he was silky smooth on the ball constantly made clutch shots. He finished the night with 41 points but 28 of those points came in the fourth quarter and throughout overtime.
Then came Rodney Hood out of nowhere after being quiet the entire game. He came off the bench in the fourth overtime with 1.07 left on the clock. He scored seven points in that time which included a clutch 3 pointer when the Blazers were down by one with 20 seconds left to play. Jokic had a chance to tie the game with two late free throws but missed one and that all but sealed their fate. Seth Curry came on to score the deciding points with 2.8 seconds left.
Noteworthy Takes From The Game
The only other time that a game has ever gone into quadruple overtime was on 21 March 1953 when the Boston Celtics beat the Syracuse Nationals 111-105. This is the first series lead that the Blazers have had in the Western Conference Semi-finals since 2000 which they ended up winning 4-1 over the Utah Jazz. Portland also managed to score 140 points for only their second time in their franchise’s playoff history.
If you never watched the came it is definitely worth a watch or even a re-watch. I am sure we all can’t wait for the rest of the series to unfold if Game 3 was this good. All we can do now is hope for more fantastic games which looks likely to occur.
