The preseason always produces excitement that gets everyone looking forward to the upcoming NFL season.
It shows us as fans who are the rookies and free agents to look forward to. For these prospects, it could be a defining year in their lives as a lot could change.
Quarterback Andy Dalton of the Cincinnati Bengals only has two years left on his contract and recently Ryan Finley has been hot on their radar. Finley was suspected of having a weak arm with some deep throws that weren’t efficient. But recently he has been terrific with his throws being as accurate as ever. He’s been showing his worth in preseason, the rookie fourth-rounder has completed at least 70 per cent of his passes, having thrown 414 yards and got three touchdowns in the process. Dalton serves as the perfect mentor to help Finley develop his game. Finley serves as a great back up to Dalton if needed and could be a Bengals star in a year or two.
Minnesota Vikings running back Mike Boone has taken a liking to his opportunities in is first two preseason games. Against the New Orleans Saints where he made an incredible 64-yard run for a touchdown. His performance against the Seattle Seahawks was particularly impressive as he totalled 111 yards from scrimmaging. Last year his opportunities were minimal as he only played 62 snaps of which 36 were on offence and 26 on special teams. This year might not be any different with Mattison still at the Vikings, but he should he be given the chance again there is a huge possibility that he could shock defences.
The New England Patriots have a future wide receiver star in Jakobi Meyers. He has shown that he has the quality to be a star one day thus far during his training camps and translated that into his game during the preseason. He has so far had at least six receptions and 69 yards in three games. Meyers was an undrafted rookie out of North Carolina State but that hasn’t stopped him from flourishing. Last week against the Carolina Panthers he had the legendary Tom Brady throwing to him, although never caught anything he still had a good game finishing with 7 receptions for 74 yards. He is now an integral part of the Patriots squad and can expect many more passes from Brady during the regular season.
The Pittsburgh Steelers certainly have a future star in wide receiver James Washington. He has been on the radar since last year when he had an impressive outing against the Green Bay Packers. He managed to get five receptions for 114 yards and two touchdowns. His regular season wasn’t too great only catching 16 passes for 217 yards and one touchdown but this is a new year and new him. Washington has had a notable preseason, already accumulating four catches in each game and is averaging 21.0 and 19.5 yards per receptions.
Expecting Another Exciting Season
With the regular season quickly approaching these prospects will need to do a bit more to ensure they play more often but there is no doubt that they can and will. With such talent in the NFL, it could make for one of the best seasons yet.
